  • Chinese Class Talent Show Slide Show

Date: 2012.02.12 | Category: Chinese Wall Pictures | Response: 25

Alright! I fixed the misplaced text on the slides and took some text out. This is the final and way better draft of my slide show about my friends’ and my experiences in Taiwan. I added annotations so you can see what the captions mean. :) The slides still say the same stuff as last time though (see the video draft for the text meaning). Hopefully they stay on the right pictures this time. My friends and people who went to the Talent Show today told me they liked my slide show. I was glad but was worried if it wouldn’t be very good; I’m glad they came and told me they liked it. The show today was really fun. I’m going to upload my friends’ skits because they were really good and deserve mentioning! My teammates were also really creative and had a good skit too (I was the narrator for the skits they were in and I played my slide show at the beginning). We got a last minute team member for the Talent Show; a golden retriever who is now named Muffin. She followed one of our group members onto the stage when we were doing our skits. What happened was our friend went to a convenience store the previous day and a dog was there. When he tried to leave she jumped on his friend’s scooter and wouldn’t get off (or on) unless he got off (or on). He walked back to his room and the dog followed him. She really likes him and follows him everywhere. If he stands up and walks somewhere she’ll be up a second after him and follow him. It’s so sweet and he has been taking good care of her

  • Richard Nixon in China Part 2: Zhou Enlai and Henry Kissinger (1972)

Date: 2012.02.01 | Category: Chinese Wall Pictures | Response: 16

February 28, 1972 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com As National Security Advisor under Nixon, Kissinger pioneered the policy of détente with the Soviet Union, seeking a relaxation in tensions between the two superpowers. As a part of this strategy, he negotiated the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (culminating in the SALT I treaty) and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party. Negotiations about strategic disarmament were originally supposed to start under the Johnson Administration but were postponed in protest to the invasion by Warsaw Pact troops of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Kissinger sought to place diplomatic pressure on the Soviet Union. He made two trips to the People’s Republic of China in July and October, 1971 (the first of which was made in secret) to confer with Premier Zhou Enlai, then in charge of Chinese foreign policy. This paved the way for the groundbreaking 1972 summit between Nixon, Zhou, and Communist Party of China Chairman Mao Zedong, as well as the formalization of relations between the two countries, ending 23 years of diplomatic isolation and mutual hostility. The result was the formation of a tacit strategic anti-Soviet alliance between China and the United States. While Kissinger’s diplomacy led to economic and cultural exchanges between the two sides and the establishment of Liaison Offices in the Chinese and American capitals, with serious

Entry from: Yangshuo, China Entry Title: “Into the Vast Expanse: China. Yangshuo.” Entry: “My first impression of China and it’s people was in stark contrast to hawks of the Vietnam tourist industry. All alone on my tod on a bus filled with itinerant Cambodian workers (I managed a cheeky hello in Khmer to which the girls all shyed away in bashful laughter) I fell asleep and was woken by a man covered in sweat in only his boxers asking to sit beside me. Just what you want to wake up to. But it turns out this guys English was fairly solid and he obviously saw me and wanted to practice. We shot the **** for a while and when we eventually stopped at a service station, despite the fact that i’d spent the last of my Vietnamese Dong getting to the bus station, he bought me my last bowl of Pho and a fresh coconut to drink from, refusing to talk the mish mash of notes I had left. Upon arrival to Nanning, the stop over point to get to Guilin, he even translated the name of the hostel I was in and arranged the taxi to take me there. What a complete legend! I’d have been stranded otherwise as the address in Chinese that I had open in a browser on my notebook decided not to open up, leaving me up a creak without a chinese interpreter. Also, entry into China was an absolute breeze. Not sure what I had

  • China – Family Holiday Dec 2002

Date: 2012.01.23 | Category: Chinese Wall Pictures | Response: 0

Clips of videos and pics taken and processed 9 years ago. Most are of my sisters, nieces and nephew. As usual, I don’t think there’s any of me (sigh!). Some memorable moments: 1. Falling on the frozen lake at the Summer Palace and breaking my tail bone 2. A Japanese tourist making a strange request to have a photograph taken with my beautiful nieces. 3. Drinking hot tea with my niece Adillah at a small cosy tea shop (she had a migraine – caffeine withdrawal) while the rest of the family waited for us at another spot due to miscommunication. I don’t remember why I used an Arabic background music (Ron Goodwin) for this montage. The video shots were taken with my Panasonic video camera and still shots with Kodak digital camera.

Entry from: Beijing, China Entry Title: “The Forbidden City” Entry: “Today was the trip to the Forbidden City. Outside the wall of our condo complex , we took a few pictures of the wall carving featuring space science. We took a bus to Tian An Men Square and toured the Square first. Another hot and humid day! The Square was decorated, almost ready for the Olympic games. Themed structures formed by flower pots were positioned at several spots throughout the Square, most of them were still being worked on by workers under the steaming heat. The sky was gray and looked smoky. Once in a while there was a little breeze, warm and sticky but even that would make us feel good. We walked toward the Tian An Men gate, stood under the famous Mao portrait, then proceeded through the gate. Inside the large courtyard behind the gate, there were souvenir stores on both sides of the walkway. We had to stop to buy bottled water or ice-cream often because the heat made you dehydrated fast. Once we were inside the ticketed gate of the Forbidden City, we started walking on the walkway paved with the stone slabs that turned hot in the breeze-less scorching heat. By the time we reached the last hall of the first group of three halls, (Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Medium Harmony, and Hall of Preserved Harmony, we were
